Zircoflex l Ceramic Coating
Modified performance cars can run much hotter than the manufacturer originally intended. The additional heat created by squeezing more power from the engine, or by driving it hard on the road or track, can lead to poor reliability and damage to ancillary components while preventing the true performance potential of upgrade components from being fully exploited.
Zircotec has developed a range of flexible heat shields known as ZircoFlex. It's a flexible foil-backed ceramic heat shield that offers improved thermal barrier performance at minimal weight and minimal thickness. This is Zircoflex I.
Zircoflex is produced by applying the ceramic material (as used in the Zircotec coating) as a tight grid in the form of thousands of individual 'platelets' onto the surface of the backing aluminium foil. Producing the material this way makes it extremely thin (0.25,mm per layer), lightweight, flexible, easy to cut and install by hand or machine.
Zircoflex works in two ways - the ceramic coating reduces the direct heat transfer and the aluminium foil reflects radiant heat. This makes it suitable for many applications:
- Protecting bodywork
- Reducing heat soak through bulkheads and footwells
- Wrapping wiring components
- Protection of engine bay components from engine/exhaust heat
- Fuel tank heat protection
Zircoflex l is the thinnest & lightest heatshield that Zircotec make at .25mm & .46kg/m2. It is extremely easy to cut with normal scissors and can be formed around objects easily.
Although Zircoflex is a highly temperature resistant material, it has a maximum working temperature of around 500 c. After this temperature the backing material may become damaged and the heat shield will fail. If you are seeing such temperatures then further heat prevention measures should be taken (i.e Zircotec coating on exhaust/turbo components).
